The Position

Summer trainings begin the week of June 13, 2022.
Seasonal Recreation Support Staff positions may organize, plan, and lead a variety of youth activities including art, craft, music, performance, science, games, and sports as well as support various community recreation and arts programs that serve and engage the public within the Portland Metro area. Camp Counselors
organize, plan, and lead a variety of activities including art, crafts, music, performance, science, games, nature, and sports in addition to supporting the physical, social, and cognitive development of preschool and school-aged participants. Positions will be responsible for maintaining discipline and safety while monitoring youth, consistently modeling appropriate behavior, maintaining accurate program records, and performing maintenance duties as assigned. Counselor hours are weekdays Mornings, afternoon, and early evenings. May work up to 40 hours a week. This position requires you to work outdoors.
This recruitment is for positions held at Charles Jordan, Matt Dishman, East Portland, Mt. Scott, Montavilla, Peninsula, St. Johns and Southwest Community Centers, Multnomah Arts Center, Community Music Center and Arleta, Beaumont, Faubion, Grout, Mt. Tabor, and Sitton SUN Schools. This is an open continuous recruitment and intended for summer employment only.

RECREATION ASSOCIATE - COUNSELOR
Summary
Counselor I & II:
Counselors organize, plan, and lead a variety of activities including art, crafts, music, performance, science, games, nature, and sports in addition to supporting the physical, social, and cognitive development of preschool and school-aged participants. Positions will be responsible for maintaining discipline and safety while monitoring youth, consistently modeling appropriate behavior, maintaining accurate program records, and performing maintenance duties as assigned.
This is a seasonal position with flexible hours and may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work hours can be assigned verbally and depend on enrollment levels, needs of the program, and other factors. There is no guarantee of the number of hours needed each week nor the number of hours worked from week to week. Employees in this position serve at will.

Ages:
Counselor I (Must be at least 15 years old by June 13th)
Counselor II (Must be at least 18 years old by June 13th)
Wage Range:
Wage Range through June 30, 2022:
Recreation Associate - Counselor I $15.00 - $16.25
Recreation Associate - Counselor II $16.25 - $17.50
Wage Range after July 1, 2022:
Wages for represented positions are pending until the completion of contract negotiations. Wage increases will be implemented effective July 1, or a retro payment will be processed if contract negotiations are completed after July 1.
Training Wage:
Counselor training wage is $15.00 for all counselor positions.

Counselor I:
Help with youth camps during summer months.
Counselor II:
Help with youth camps during summer months. Participates in program leadership and provides direction to counselor I staff.

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for these positions:
Ability to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
General knowledge of assigned recreation area.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.
Ability to recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations.
Ability to problem-solve and respond to customer concerns.
Applicants must also:
Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire.
For Counselor I: Be at least 15 years old by date of hire.
For Counselor II: Be at least 18 years old by date of hire.
