The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee who has been appointed to the Pathways Summer Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development.

Current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level. Includes internships, pathways and other student programs.
The public
U.S. Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.S.
Duties Receives telephone calls and visitors. Answers the telephone and refers callers or visitors to appropriate personnel based on specific name or functional area request.
Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR.
Leads three or more lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties.
Provides customer service assistance. Answers telephone, sends and receives FAX transmissions and greets customers.
The student trainee will perform very simple, routine clerical work in office, business, or fiscal operations and to provide training and experience for higher graded work.
Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries.
Requirements Conditions of Employment
Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
Must be at least 16 years of age
Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualiflying accredited institution
Must sign a Participant Agreement
U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
Males 18 years or older must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
Meet the qualification standards of the position
Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures. Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also have surf-rescue training specified in 34-110.
Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.
Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification. May be required to possess a current and valid nationally recognized Water safety Instructor certificate.
May be required to work other normal duty hours such as evening, weekends and/or holidays. May provide advice and guidance, such as orientation, lesson plans etc., to low grade lifeguards.
Some physical exertions required in effecting a swimming rescue: Must be able to lift and carry 45lbs and over, much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling and reaching is required.
If positions is identified as having regular contact with children (i.e. youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.
Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.
Participation required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues through the period of employment. All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.

Education: Successful completion of 1 year of study above high school.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must submit a copy of transcripts.



QUALIFICATIONS For GS-04: Six months of general experience for GS-0199-04 level positions. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled

-AND-

At least Six months of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-03) or equivalent. Specialized experience must have the ability rescue and resuscitate individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries; clean and maintain the swimming facility; and provide assistance in planning, monitoring, and/or supervising recreation activities.

-OR-

EDUCATION: For GS-04: Successful completion of two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

-OR-

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must submit a copy of transcripts.



You will be required to obtain and maintain the following CURRENT Certification if you are selected for Lead Lifeguard/Lifeguard.



1. A current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures. Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also have surf-rescue training specified in AFI 34-110.

2. A current and valid nationally recognized instructor certification.

3. A current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification.

4. A current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification, which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.

5. Some positions may required to maintain a Water Safety Instructor certification.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:



1. Knowledge of various recreation activity rules and procedures.

2. Ability to learn general office administrative and clerical procedures to distribute mail, use copier, and answer telephone.

3. Skill in performing limited aspects of recreation work in accordance with safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures.

4. Skill in maintenance and use of recreation materials and equipment used in providing support and assistance to recreation specialist or recreation program manager.

5. Ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.



PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.



VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
