There has never been a time in the history of humanity that sports has had as much prominence in society as it does today. Sports have invaded every aspect of our lives. Large sporting events attract venue crowds in the tens and hundreds of thousands. Television viewership often dwarfs the crowds at the venue with mega events such as the FIFA World Cup now estimated to attract a television viewership of about 1 billion viewers! These huge numbers of course attract big money as well. It is one of the main reasons why sports jobs are very highly prized today. Anyone with a sports management degree has the potential to be very successful upon graduation.

Sports management is quickly becoming a popular course of study in major universities thanks to the phenomenal growth and financial depth of the sports industry. Sports management is more than just physical education. When someone graduates with a degree in sports management they are expected to be well versed in basic business principles, accounting, and marketing. Sports management and similar structured degrees are meant to bring management skills to recreation jobs. Person's with sports management degrees are better placed to compete for such senior sports jobs as club general managers, marketing directors, athletic directors, and even sports agents. The basic compensation for these senior level positions in the sports industry is usually over $100,000.00 per year.

Of course, not every person with a sports management degree will be able to start at these high level positions. Even in recreation jobs, one must be willing and patient enough to learn the ropes and then grow from there. In addition, getting into the industry at a lower position has its benefits especially for someone in the industry for the long haul. For instance, it is at these positions that one can best understand the intricate details and inner workings of the sport.

Sports management graduates can also work in certain positions within sports or sports affiliated industries that would be considered non-core. A good example is landing a job as the manager of a sports retail chain. But one does not have to restrict themselves to being employed; there are also other good opportunities for self-employment. Becoming a sports agent is one example. The bottom line though is that a genuine passion for sports is what will lead to a successful sports management career.

Sports management degrees can be obtained in a few different ways. For one, you can always go to a university and attend a four year degree in management and business principles. However, for persons that are already working a full time job, there are several online options available for two and four year degrees. It is a good idea to check these online schools for accreditation before enrolling. If you love sports and would like a great career in the sporting industry, obtaining a sports management degree is a great way to get started.
